The work of the Institute follows the UN Paris Principals relating to the status and functioning of national institutions for the protection and promotion of human rights, and the activities of the DIHR comprise of research, information, education and training, project activities, studies and documentation regarding Danish, European and international conditions. Further more the DIHR is a national specialized equality body with a mandate to protect persons against discrimination on grounds of race and ethnic origin and to promote equal treatment.

The DIHR is the principal organization in Denmark for gathering knowledge on human rights and equal treatment and it closely cooperates with civil society as well as with national public and private authorities, international treaty bodies and organizations.
